Short description

The module includes three compulsory courses, covering risk management principles and risk analysis techniques in different industrial plants. The emphasis is on topics such as EU directives on industrial safety, major accident prevention, risk assessment methodologies applied to petrochemical and power industries, as well as environmental and human health hazards. The courses encompass the theoretical basics for rules and regulations, risk identification and analysis methods, on the other hand numerous examples demonstrate the milestones and recent events concerning industrial safety and security.

Objectives

Knowledge to be acquired in this module covers introduction to the topics of risks in industry and includes general introduction, specific introduction / basics for single industry branches. At the end of the course students are expected to have basic knowledge about:

  • general terms used in the area of risk, safety, hazard, risk and risk assessment...
  • respective EU regulation/directives such as REACH, Seveso II, ATEX, and the obligations resulting from them
  • main elements of the process safety assessment (input data, hazards identification methods and tools, scenario elaboration and assessment of related risks…), including major accidents prevention policy
  • safety measures, based on regulatory requirements, as implemented in the different EU member states.

As an option, the course covers the issues of risk perception and risk communication and tackles the method of stakeholder involvement in technical risk management.

In particular the basic skills in the areas bellow will be covered:

RBI - Risk based inspection in petrochemical industry: Principles of risk based inspection, existing approaches and gives links to applied codes and standards. The focus is given to API 581.Levels of analysis and usage of analysis results will be elaborated and illustrated with examples.

RBI - Risk based inspection in power plants: The state-of-the art knowledge of risk based approaches currently applied in power generation industries to the wide range of professionals involved in different activities in conventional power generation.

RCM/RCFA: Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Root Cause Failure Analysis (RCFA) as methodologies used for logical decision-making process for analysis and definition of the equipment maintenance requirements, as well as for accident prevention. The focus of the course is on the damage mechanisms appearing in different industries. A large number of well elaborated examples is included.

The competences will cover the leadership of the RBI/RCM/RCFA teams.

Course Content by Units

Introduction to Risk Management in Industry (general)

The course represents a general introduction to the topics of risks related to the general use of the chemicals by a modern society and related industrial sectors (chemical/process, oil & gas, power generation, heating, etc.).
Hazards, related risks, and due legislative safety measures will be outlined considering acute (accidents) and chronic (pollution) risks within life cycle of chemicals (hazardous materials) and will be presented in units 1 and 2. Units 3
and 4 aim to provide introduction to major accidents prevention (EU legislative obligations) and related process safety risk assessment methodology. Where applicable, related EU directives are briefly mentioned.

Analysis in Chemical/Petroleum Industries

The petroleum industry is changing rapidly, challenging
many organizations and individuals to keep pace and distinguish opportunity from risk. This course will present
current global and regional happenings in the upstream, midstream, downstream and in petrochemical industries. It will increase understanding of the industry's strengths and weaknesses and the risk issues.

Risk Analysis in Power Industries

This course provides knowledge of risk analysis applied
specifically in power industry, starting with advantages and
effectiveness of its application. It presents the regulatory
basis and requirements, and elaborate commonly used
methods through number of examples.

Teaching Methods

The course includes:

  • theoretical lecturing illustrated by number of examples
  • study cases for all major topics
  • presentation of commonly used software tools and collective exercises
  • preparation for final exam by repetition of all course units and main issues
  • final exam
